A Steering Committee on the development of a National Code of Corporate Governance for Nigeria was inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga (CON), on Thursday, 17th January, 2013. The Committee is charged with the responsibility of developing a unified Code of Corporate Governance that will enable the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, among other things, to promote the highest standards of corporate governance, promote public awareness about corporate governance principles and practices, act as the national coordinating body responsible for all matters pertaining to corporate governance in both private and public sectors of the Nigerian economy, promote sound financial reporting and accountability based on true and fair financial statements duly audited by competent independent auditors, encourage sound systems of internal control and information systems control to safeguard stakeholders’ investment and assets of public interest entities, and ensure that audit committees of public interest entities keep under review the scope of audit and its cost effectiveness, the independence and objectivity of the auditors.
The Committee, which is expected to complete its assignment not later than six months from the date of inauguration, is made up of Mr. Victor Odiase (Chairman), Mr. E. A. Okoro, Mr. Mohammed Yola Datti, Mr. Nicholas Opara, Mrs. Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, Mr. A. M. Adeyemi, Mr. Adedapo Adeleke, Mr. R. A. Adams, Mr. Ibrahim Rafindadi, Mr. A. G. Abubakar, Mr. Dele Togunde, Mr. Yomi Adebanjo, Dr. I. Olushola Dada, Dr. Demola Odeyemi, Mr. Dimeji Salaudeen, Ms. Bennedikter Molokwu, Mrs Uto Ukpanah and Dr. Nat Ofo.
